Bi-weekly status #59 (20241025)

Headline

The big news this period was the replacement of my main render system. Every time I have to migrate to a new machine, I forget what happened the last time I did it. This time around, it was a royal pain in the @ss. Migrating the git server that I use for source code control took forever, because I didn’t have Turkish to help out this time around. git is supposed to be easy. I’ve never been able to fully grasp its nuances, relying on my development tools to handle the low-level access. But when you start working at the server level, you need a pretty good understanding of how it works behind-the-scenes.

I managed to stumble my way through it and got everything back on-line. I think.

Add to everything that Daz decided to update Daz Studio. I almost didn’t upgrade, but there were some features in the new, Premier version that I’ve always wanted. That upgrade also took some time to port over the databases from the previous version, combined with being on a new machine. Everything is now working the way I expect. Knock on wood.

Progress

Now, on to the progress. Not a lot, unfortunately. But I did get a bit further into scene 6. It’s a very complicated scene with several overlapping paths based on previous choices. I also had to go back and re-render a bunch of already completed backgrounds for continuity (images or lighting don’t match from one image to the next). When I’m not constructing images in sequence, it can be difficult to keep everything in sync which I don’t discover until later when I playtest the scene in progress. I’ve got to be better about dotting my Is and crossing my Ts before committing time to a render.

Speaking of renders, my new RTX-4090 system is a tad bit faster than the old dual RTX-3090 system it replaces. Not a lot (maybe 5%) but better than being slower. It is also a lot quieter, even being fully air-cooled, than my old water-cooled system. Fans. What a concept.

Housekeeping

The free Halloween 2024 4K render went out last Friday. I was sent a lot of questions, mostly about why Spider Gwen had blue ballet slippers and why I consider Aloy a superhero. But everybody seemed to enjoy it. Especially because it was free…

The new poll for 4K desktop renders is closed. Here were the results across all platforms:

So, Alex is the subject for my next set of renders for my upper-tier supporters over on Patreon and SubscribeStar. Already done, and queued up for release on November 1st! The October renders of the Jeffries gals were the most downloaded ever.

One week left in my poll about future titles. (Expires on Halloween! Coincidence?) Go vote if you haven’t already!
